NJ Office of the State Comptroller

New Jersey’s Office of the State Comptroller, the state’s independent investigative agency, released a report on the 15 worst-performing nursing homes in New Jersey — facilities that had been repeatedly cited for putting patients’ health and safety in jeopardy.

I created a digital data dashboard to complement the release of this groundbreaking report, which served as a resource for families, advocates, and journalists alike to hold poor-performing nursing homes accountable.

OSC’s policy solution—to withhold Medicaid funds from chronically low-performing nursing homes—broke through, and was promoted in national media and legislative hearings. I secured national and statewide press about the report and the coverage sparked a widespread conversation about this novel policy solution to an urgent issue.

The data dashboard helped visualize the amount of money New Jersey taxpayers were spending on chronically poor-performing nursing homes, and showed how the overwhelming majority of them were privately-owned. That week, traffic to OSC’s website was 50 times higher than a typical week.
